Achievement Assembly – 15th February

Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing comp

One of the unexpected pleasures you get from doing Achievement Assembly is seeing the range of skills and talents some of our boys possess. We began our award presentations with Rock Climbing. It was nice to hear from David what he had to do to achieve his Level 3 Rock Climbing award.

More boys accomplished their Gold Standard in Mathletics. Well done boys.

Our School were involved in sporting action this week. Monday saw us play Grosvenor School at rugby.

Grosvenor 20, NHJS 65.

Try scorers:

S. King x 6

O. Brenchley x 4

T. Picker x 3

In freezing cold conditions the game started strongly for NHJS with Sammy scoring 2 quick tries by running  into open space . The forwards for Grosvenor started to take a bit of a grip on the game though, counter rucking very well and taking the ball away from NHJS. In the second half Thomas and James in particular really picked up their game at the breakdown,  contesting strongly at the ruck and maul. In the end NHJS had too many strong runners, with Oliver and Sammy running around the space on the outside, whilst Thomas drove to the try line through the middle. It was a mixed game defensively for NHJS with too many half attempts at tackles and backing away from Grosvenor’s bigger stronger runners. This was not the case though for James  who made two of the biggest tackles ever witnessed, shaking the opposition down to their core whilst creating a thud so loud it could be heard for miles around! It was an outstanding display of bravery, confidence and tackling technique which has set a very high defensive standard for the rest to follow.

Players’ Man of the Match:

James  and Oliver  (received 3 votes each).

Manager’s Man of the Match:

Oliver  for a superb blend of attacking play (4 tries), and consistently effective tackling throughout the match.

My thanks to Mr Baker for a very illustrative report.

IAPS Swimming regional rounds held at Warwick.

On Tuesday , Mrs Whittamore took nine NHJS boys to represent the school in the regional rounds of a national swimming competition for independent schools. This year’s closest regional round was held at Warwick Prep School. There are several regional rounds held all around the country . The top 16 fastest swimmers qualify for  the individual finals and the top 12 relay teams are selected for the national IAPS Finals at K2, Crawley. There were five schools taking part in the Warwick round but the boys knew that it was all against the stopwatch. All of the boys swam exceedingly well and should be proud of their efforts in the face of strong competition.  It was a pleasure to take all nine boys on the trip.

Senior School Joint Creative Writing Competition

Our children took part in a Senior School Joint Creative Writing Competition  and our boys did really well. It was the first time we had been involved in such a whole school venture of this kind. The pupils had to write on the theme of A Winter’s Wonderland.
